How to make a fabric Golly
MATERIALS:

Paper for templates: 36" wide
Cotton fabric: 36" Black, 36" Pink, 36" Check
Felt fabric: 9" square yellow
Felt fabric scraps: white, blue, black, pale pink, dark pink
Additional items: Matching thread, filling, fabric adhesive, narrow elastic, 3 press fasteners, 3 small buttons, 3oz chunky black wool.

TO MAKE TEMPLATES:

Cut a piece of paper 26" X 21" . Mark into 1" squares  and following diagram below make templates.

    TO CUT OUT:

    From the black fabric cut two body pieces. From the pink fabric cut four trouser pieces (fitting template carefully on fabric allowance). From the check fabric cut two jacket fronts (one in reverse). Cut back, sleeves and two collar pieces, placing templates against fold where indicated.
    From the yellow felt, cut four side boot pieces and two soles. From white, cut two eyes and one mouth. From blue, cut two inner eyes. From black, cut two pupils. From Pale Pink cut one inside mouth. From  Dark Pink cut piece 3" x 1.5" and another 1" x  3/8" 

    TO MAKE:

    with 1/4" seams, sew cotton materials right sides facing, raw edges level. Sew body sections together, leaving bottom of legs open and a gap between A and B. Turn body to right side.
    For each boot, topstitch two side boot pieces together at back and front . Topstitch sole into each boot and trim seams to 1/8". Sew boots to legs, making sure centre fronts face forwards.
    Fill golly firmly through gap A-B. Turn in seam allowance  between A-B and oversew. Sew across tops of legs  and arms where indicated on diagram by broken lines, moving the filling to each side as you sew. Using fabric adhesive, stick on features.
    To make trousers sew outside leg seams and crotch to waist seams  at back and front. Sew  inside leg seams making sure crotch seams match. Turn hem at end of each leg. Make a 1/2" casing at waist leaving a small gap. Thread elastic through and sew ends together. Close gap. Turn to right side. For jacket, sew back to fronts at shoulder and side seams. Sew sleeve seams. Sew sleeves
    into armholes. Sew hem at wrists of sleeves and down front and bottom edges. Sew on press fasteners at equal intervals down front and sew buttons over them. Sew outer edges of the two collar pieces together, turn to the right and press. Sew one inside edge to outside of neckline, turn in remaining edge and hem over first line of stiches. Turn jacket to right side. To make Bow tie, curve corners of larger piece of dark pink felt and wrap narrow piece over centre. Sew in place at neckline. From Black wool, make about fifty pom-pons  

    TO MAKE POM-PONS 

    Cut two cardboard discs 1" in diameter. Cut a 1/4" hole in centre of each  disc. Thread needle with two strands of wool. Put the two discs together and working through centre holes , cover evenly with wool. Slip scissors between discs and cut all strands along outside edge. Draw a strand of wool down between discs and wind several times very tightly between the strands. Knot the securing strand, leaving the ends to attach pom-pon. Sew to head in rows, starting just below eye
    level and graduating to shape shown in picture of Golly. Sew one pom-pon to each foot. Dress Golly.

     Needle sizes quoted throughout  this pattern are U.K: equivalent  Metric sizes are  Nos. 2mm for 14, 2.75 mm for 13, 2.75mm for 12, 3mm for 11, 3.75mm for 10, 3.75mm for 9, 4mm for 8 and 4.5mm for 7.

    Materials Required:

    Of  Patons Beehive Double Knitting - 2 (50g) balls of red. 1- (50g) ball of royal blue. 1- (50g) black and 1 (50g) ball of yellow. Oddment of white.

    Of  Patons Beehive Knits as 4 ply - 1 (50g) ball of black : Scraps of white: yellow and red for embroidery.

    Pair each No 11 and No 12 Milward needles.  Kapok for stuffing.

    Measurements;  Heights, 17 ins.

    Tension;  11.5 sts. measured across 2 ins. in garter -stitch on No 11 needles.

    N.B. Face and hands are in stocking-stitch. Hair in loop-stitch.  All other parts garter-stitch, ie. every row knit.

    Use Double Knitting yarn unless otherwise stated. Join all seams neatly on right side when making up.

     

    Body and Legs: Start with legs. With No 11 needles and royal blue yarn , cast on 17 sts. K. 64 rows for 1st. leg.

    Break yarn. Onto same needle, cast on 17 sts. and K. 64 rows for 2nd leg

    Next row.  K. across both sets of stitches (34 sts.). Next row : K. 2 tog. K. to last 2 sts. K. 2 tog. K. 3 rows.

    Rep. the last 4 rows twice more (28 sts.). Break royal blue yarn.

    Join in red and K. 30 rows. Cast off 3 sts. at beg. of next 4 rows for shoulders. Cast off remaining  stitches.

    Make another piece the same. Join halves together leaving neck open for stuffing. Stuff firmly.

    Head: With No 12 needles and black 4 ply yarn, cast on 19 sts. 

    Continue in stocking-stitch as follows: Next row :  P., incr.1 st. at each end. Rep. the last 2 rows twice more. Work 6 rows straight.

    Next row: K. twice in 1st stitch, k. to last stitch, k. twice in last stitch. Work 17 rows straight. Next row. K. 2 tog., k.  to last 2 sts, k 2 tog. Work 3 rows straight.  Next row: K. 2 tog., k. to last 2 sts., k. 2 tog. Cast off.

    Make another piece the same. Join halves together , leaving cast-off edges open for stuffing. Stuff firmly.

    Neck: with No 11 needles and white yarn, cast on 34 sts. K. 8 rows. Cast off. Join short ends.

    Join cast-off edge of neck round neck opening on body.

    Stuff neck well, then sew neck opening on head round top edge of neck, adding extra stuffing if necessary as you go along.

    Hair:  with No 11 needles and black yarn, cast on 39 sts.  Next row:  K. 1,* insert needle knitways into next stitch, place forefinger at back of stitch, then wind yarn anti-clockwise round needle and finger 3 times, draw through 3 loops; rep. From * to last stitch, K. 1.

    Next row:  K. 1. * K. 3 tog. Through back of stitches, then give loops a slight tug  to tighten as you go along; rep. from * to last stitch,  k. 1.

    Rep. last 2 rows 9 times more. Cast off.

    Gather up cast-off edge, then fold in half making a little bonnet shape to fit round face and over back of head.

    Stuff lightly adding extra on top to give a slight dome shape to top of head. Sew into position. 

    Features:  Using 4 ply yarn.  Eyes, white buttonhole stitch and black satin-stitch. Nose, 2 small straight stitches in red.

    Mouth:  straight stitches in red, i.e. 3 long stitches for top lip and 3 long stitches caught down with a vertical straight stitch for bottom lip; a long white straight stitch across middle of mouth for teeth.

    Feet:  With No.11 needles and yellow yarn, cast on 9 sts. Next row: K.

    Next 2 rows: K. twice in 1st stitch, k. to last stitch, incr. in last stitch. K. 19 rows.

    Next 2 rows: K. 2 tog., k to last 2 sts. k. 2 tog. Cast off. Make 3 more pieces the same.

    Sew each pair together leaving opening for stuffing. Stuff firmly and sew up opening. Sew feet to legs.

    Arms and Hands:  With No 12 needles and black 4ply, cast on 24 sts.

    Continue in stocking-stitch as follows:-  Next row: K. Next row:  P.

    Next row: K. twice in 1st. stitch . k. 10, k. twice in each of next 2 sts, k. 10, k. twice in last stitch (28 sts.)  Work 9 rows straight.

    Next row: K. 2 tog., k. 10, (k. 2 tog) twice. k. 10, k. 2 tog. Next row: P. Break 4 ply.

    Change to No. 11 needles and white Double Knitting and k. 8 rows. Change to red and k. 36 rows.

    Next row: K. twice in 1st. stitch, k. to last stitch, k. twice in last stitch. K. 5 rows. Cast off. Make another piece the same.

    Fold each piece in half lengthways and join leaving top open for stuffing. Stuff firmly and sew up opening. Sew arms to body.

    Vest:  With  No.11 needles and white yarn, cast on 2 sts.

    Next row: K.  Next row: K., incr. 1 st. at each end.  Next 3 rows :K. Rep. last 4 rows 6 times more. Cast-off. Sew to centre front of body with cast-off  edge along start of neck.

    Right Rever:  With red yarn and No. 12 needles, cast on 5 sts.

    ** Next 3 rows: K.  Next row: K., incr. 1 st. at each end. Rep. last  4 rows once more.

     K. 8 rows straight. Next row: K., incr. 1 st. at each end . Rep. last 9 rows twice more.

    K. 2 rows. Cast-off.**

    Make another piece the same. Join these 2 pieces together.

    Left Rever: Cast on 2 sts. K. 2 rows.  Next row : K. incr. 1 st. at each end. K. 5 rows.

    Rep. last 6 rows once more. K. 7 rows. 

    Now rep. From** to ** as for right rever. Make another piece the same and join together.

    Sew revers to body down sides of vest crossing left rever over bottom of right.

    Bow Tie: With royal blue yarn and No 12 needles, cast on 40 sts. K. 6 rows.

    Next  row : K. 20, turn and leave remaining 20 sts. on a spare needle.

    Continue on first 20 sts. as follows:- * Next row: K. 2 tog,  k. to end. Next row: K. to last 2 sts. k. 2 tog.

    Rep. last 2 rows 7 times more . Next row: K. 2  tog.,  k 2.  Next row: K. 1, k 2 tog. Cast off. *

    Rejoin yarn to remaining 20 sts. at centre and work from * to *.

    Make another piece the same. On one piece embroider yellow spots in 4 ply.

    Join the 2 sections together, wind royal blue yarn several times round centre of bow tie and sew to neck.

    Jacket Tails:  With No 11 needles and red yarn, cast on 30 sts.  Next row:  K.

    Next row:  K. 2 tog,  k. to end . Rep. last 2 rows until 3 sts. remain. Cast off.

    Make another piece the same. Sew tails along back of jacket with straight edges meeting in centre.

    With yellow 4 ply embroider french knots for buttons - 3 down centre of vest and 2 on jacket.
