Where's Golly?Peep-oh! -
I bet you didn’t expect to find me here! Have you wondered where I was? I’ve been playing hide and seek. Someone was after me, I don’t know who it was or how many of them there were. They’ll never catch me of course, because although there are millions of replicas of me, I exist in people’s imaginations.
I’m famous you know. In years gone by almost every child, or at least every family, had a Golly. I was very much loved by those who owned one. I was always smiling and always smartly dressed. I would be taken out in a pram or perhaps to relatives for Sunday tea. Those were the good old days!
Children from all over the world joined the Golliwog Club. There were medals and badges distributed and children’s books written about the exciting, imaginary adventures of a Golly.

Even the people at the Roberston’s jam factory loved me because my picture helped them to sell lots of jam and marmalade, making their products well known all over the world. Such fun was had by all.
Then, all of a sudden, for reasons I cannot think of, people began to whisper whenever they spoke of me. Pictures of me were hidden and soon everyone seemed afraid to even mention my name. Strange forces were at work creating trouble, where once there was only love.
Quite recently I came across a group of people who thought that this was ridiculous and said they would help me. I discovered that they also knew of many others who were equally indignant that their favourite toy had become such a symbol of fear.
It’s just awful being in exile. I don’t like not being loved, I want to reclaim my rightful place in people’s hearts.
